project "noodle bank" 2011.4.9-5.7

concept drawing

On March 11th 2011, a huge earthquake had hit the east part of Japan with Tsunami, and the nuclear power plant blasted a few days later. I had been preparing my solo show in Tokyo, but I needed to fled to Kyoto for a while. There were moments that I was giving up my show. However, I was constantly getting emails from overseas asking my safetey, words of encouragement, and all of them had a phrase at the end saying "let me know if I can do something". This project was a response to their offering of help, and my concern on using the instant noodles, which is an emergency food under the devastated situation, as the material for an art works.

The response was way over my expectation.
209 instant noodles from 12 countries including Germany, Canada, Austria, Vietnam, UK, Australia, Hong Kong, Mexico, Korea, Netherlands, Spain, Japan were donated. The visitor gave total donation of 70,000yen, which were then all given to FUKUSHIMA! O-FUROSHIKI Project.

"from the email I sent out"

Dear friends,

How are you doing?

As you know, Japan is facing a great difficulties.
I received many many emails concerning my safety and it was truly encouraging.
I would like to thank you for it, and ask continuous help as the things are not settled down yet.

and I am fine, but need some help!

I am preparing a show in Tokyo, starting from 9th of April.
It happened to be about "instant noodle".
The work features the sound of noodle. (it makes sound when you pour some water)

I have been planning to make noodles to the visitors during the exhibition,
but now I want to add another action to ask people to donate for the people in Tohoku to have a bowl of noodle.

If I can gather noodles from overseas,
the action/idea would link you to me to visitors to people in Tohoku.
by me making your noodle to the visitors, and them donating to the people in Tohoku.

Thanks for reading my petition/letter,
please reply to me if you agree to join me.

all the best from Tokyo.
(I am back in Tokyo to set up my exhibition.)
